Festival of skills

Our seminar on how an international crisis simulation can be used to engage learners, develop confidence and teach communication skills at the recent Festival of Skills inspired and engaged an audience of staff from colleges and other organisations. Andy Gillman MBE, who runs the Ministry of Defence's outreach programme, presented a hypothetical international conflict in a fictitious country in south-east Asia where British nationals were trapped in a dangerous situation. Participants,  taking on roles such as Prime Minister, are then asked to come up with an action plan and present it as a press conference, reacting to new via video as the situation escalates. Kathleen Hawke, from Croydon College, explained how she uses the exercise within the college's OCN London Skills for Professions course to develop employability and communication skills with learners.
