Become an OCN London Subject Specialist Moderator

Remuneration:           dependent on work allocated

Job Description

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic, motivated and attentive subject specialist moderators to contribute to the work of our Access to HE team.

We are particularly interested in appointing subject specialists in:

  • Engineering
  • Biology
  • Dance
  • Law
  • Art and Design, Creative and Digital Media or Fashion
  • Drama or Theatre Arts
  • Social Work

Applications from subject specialists in other areas covered by our Diploma titles are also welcome. We are particularly looking for applications from those who live or work in London.

External moderators play an important role in OCN London’s quality assurance strategy by ensuring that the operation and assessment of Diploma courses is valid, reliable, fit for purpose and inclusive.

Subject specialist moderators are allocated moderation responsibilities at two or more centres to moderate one or more courses that come within your area of subject expertise. Access to HE Diploma courses usually run from September to July. A mid-year moderation monitoring visit is made by the moderation team halfway through the year (usually February or March) and a Final Moderation visit to confirm the learners’ achievement of the Diploma is made at the end of the academic year (June or July). Moderators are also required to attend a training session in December.

Occasionally, there are other opportunities for external moderators to be involved in OCN London in development work for Diplomas, such as by producing exemplar assessment materials, being involved in unit reviews and validation panels or facilitating standardisation events.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate:

  • sound understanding of the Access to HE diploma
  • a relevant degree or professional qualification or relevant industrial/professional experience  in the subject area
  • experience of teaching in this subject area at Level 3 or above
  • commitment to equality of opportunity and widening participation
  • experience of adult teaching and learning
excellent interpersonal skills and proven organisational ability

Appointment to the team of subject specialists does not necessarily guarantee that work will be available in any particular year. Appointments normally take place between October and December.
