VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Our flexible vocational qualifications are designed to help people to move on to employment or further study in a particular sector or, to enhance their skills for career progression. They are aimed at learners who may want to go on to higher level qualifications, or gain the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for in particular sectors and job roles. The qualifications are offered at different levels, from Entry Level to Level 4.

Typically, learners will take a mandatory unit and then select from a wide choice of optional units – a combination of vocational-specific units and those that aim to develop employability skills.


Animal care

The Animal Welfare Act in England places a legal obligation for those working with or keeping animals to care for them properly. The animal care sector is expanding, currently employing 200,000 people in the UK in more than 20,000 businesses in areas as diverse as farming, breeding, animal grooming, zoos, wildlife establishments, animal training and animal welfare enforcement. This qualification provides vocational learning experience for those who wish to move on to employment or further study in animal care, in how to correctly maintain the health, safety and welfare or animals including key skills such as understanding animal behaviour, moving and handling animals, feeding and washing, identifying hazards and understanding and encouraging natural behaviour.

The OCNLR Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Professions in Animal Care offers learners the opportunity to combine vocational unit learning experience in a particular sector with the essential study and/or employability skills required for progression to Level 2 study or employment. Applied science and technology

People with expertise and skills in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM subjects) are in great demand by employers. A recent CBI survey of over 700 influential business leaders confirmed that STEM skills are vital to areas of future growth and employability, with around 45 per cent of employers reporting difficulty in recruiting STEM-skilled staff. These qualifications offer a wide range of optional units to choose from including biology, chemistry, electronics, energy, forensic science, mathematics and medical imaging.

Building and construction

The expanding economy means more opportunities in the construction industry for people with suitable skills. The purpose of these qualifications is to provide learners with the underpinning skills and knowledge required to progress to further study in the building and construction industries and, ultimately, to work in these or other related sectors.

Business, administration and finance

Business administration offers a range of good career opportunities as almost every organisation needs people with skills in areas such as IT, finance, customer relations and communications. The purpose of these qualifications is to provide an introduction to the principles and standards of working in business administration. They are aimed at learners aged 14 plus who may want to start a career in business administration or at people already working in the sector who want to improve their skills and gain recognition for their knowledge. The qualifications may also be particularly suited to school leavers, unemployed individuals or those who have been out of education for some time.

Customer service

Employers are constantly stressing the importance of good customer service and the need for employees with ‘soft skills’. These qualifications can contribute to the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Customer Service – a programme designed for people in customer service roles in a variety of environments, from organisations providing mainly face-to-face contact with customers to those offering predominantly online services. The aim is to provide learners with the skills and knowledge they need to improve their employment prospects or become competent in their chosen job.

Creative and digital

The creative and digital industries are one of the fastest-growing sectors in the UK. There are opportunities for careers in areas as diverse as advertising, computer games, digital marketing, graphic design, fashion, film, music and web development. The combined creative industries contribute around six per cent of the UK’s GDP and employ over two million people, many of whom are based in London.

Early years

The early education and childcare business is growing fast. According to the Department of Education 1,321,900 children aged 3 and 4 and 157,040 children aged 2 were taking part in funded education in January 2015. Our qualification is designed to meet the skills requirements of early years providers including safeguarding, and understanding of the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of children, communication and listening skills and knowledge of activity planning for children. As well as early years education, the knowledge and skills acquired from this qualification can be applied to areas such as playwork, nursery work and roles within children's centres.

Engineering

A recent CBI survey confirmed an increasing demand for people with skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with around 45 per cent of employers experiencing difficulty recruiting STEM-skilled staff. Engineering is one of the areas where demand is particularly high. These qualifications offer a wide range of optional units to choose from that include production planning, computer-aided drawing, engineering materials and much more.

Enterprise and business

The aim of this suite of qualifications is to enable learners to gain a broad understanding of the world of business. They are primarily aimed at people interested in working for themselves or starting a business, but may also be relevant to people looking for a career in as an employee in a business. Some qualifications offer a broad introduction to creating a business, whereas other qualifications are more specialised in areas such as sales, product development, launching a social enterprise and growing a business internationally. They offer progression from Level 1 to Level 3.

Hairdressing and beauty

To develop a successful career in hairdressing, people need a range of skills, from technical areas such as cutting and styling, to the essential customer service and ‘people’ skills. Hairdressers work in a variety of environments – in hotels, hospitals, care homes, armed forces bases, on cruise ships, in the film, theatre and TV industries, as well as in salons. Statistics from Habiba, the hair and beauty industry authority show that 20.5% of salons have reported skills shortages and available vacancies. Our Level 1 creative hair studies qualifications are aimed at school or college leavers, adult returners or people of any age who want to change career.

The health and social care sector offers a wide range of opportunities for people with the right skills and aptitude for working with people. This suite of qualifications seeks to develop skills and knowledge in the broad health and social care sector, along with more specialist areas. Public services

Public service design and delivery is a challenging role that has to meet the many varied and complex needs of a diverse and changing population. Retail knowledge

These qualifications are aimed at people who want to work in the retail sector but need a better understanding of what it involves, or for people already working in retail outlets who wish to add to existing skills and knowledge. They will learn about stock control and customer payments, along with developing skills in teamwork and customer service.

Skills for vocational studies

The OCNLR Entry Level Qualifications in Skills for Vocational Studies (Entry 3) have been designed to provide flexible routes for learners to develop essential learning and employability skills, alongside knowledge and skills from a wide range of vocational areas.

The Certificate (32 credits) enables learners to develop their learning and employability skills, while exploring one or more vocational area. This makes the qualification ideal for engaging learners who may be undecided on their choice of vocational area, and one of its benefits is that it can be delivered as part of a Study Programme.

The Award is a smaller qualification (9 credits), ideal for delivery as a ‘taster’. Containing the same range of units as the Certificate, this ‘bite-sized’ qualification is suitable for those learners who may have not decided on a specific vocational area or are not yet ready to commit to a larger qualification.

As well as being useful ‘stand-alone’ qualifications, the OCNLR Entry Level Qualifications in Skills for Vocational Studies (Entry 3) enable learners to develop a firm foundation for successful progression to Level 1, and include a selection of optional learning and employability units at that level.

Sport

The numbers of UK adults participating in sport is on the rise. Research by Sport England has found that 15.74 million adults now play sport at least once a week. 1.65 million more than in 2005/6. As a consequence there are now more employment opportunities in this area in a wide range of roles including sports coaching, performance analysis, disability sports, sports development, gym and leisure centre management and outdoor activities and education. Our qualification has been created to meet the skills requirements of the sports sector covering planning fitness programmes and activities, assisting with sports and leisure events, sports coaching, health, nutrition and the workings of the body.
