LIFE SKILLS

This group of qualifications covers a range of skills that people – particularly those with learning difficulties – need to function independently and start on a learning journey. They include study skills as well as life skills. What is special about these qualifications is that they offer learners a goal to aim for. Achieving a qualification – for many of them their first – is a significant boost to their confidence and self esteem.

Independent living

People with learning difficulties and disabilities often find it difficult to cope with day-to-day living without support. These qualifications, designed to meet the requirements of the Foundation Learning Independent Living Strand, have been developed to address their needs and help them to develop skills which will enable them to live more independently. The focus is on transferable social and life skills that are essential for living and working in the community, such as household skills, personal care and participating in leisure activities.

Personal progress

A great deal of commendable work with learners at and below Entry 1 is undertaken by schools, FE colleges, adult education colleges, training centres and residential centres, but little of it has been accredited in the past, although much of it is recognised as being pioneering and innovative. These wide ranging qualifications were designed to mirror the best of this practice and provide opportunities for learners to build up credits over time or put together a personalised programme. The qualifications cover reading, writing, maths and independent living skills such as looking after your home and workplace skills.
